Does anyone know what torque spec is for the 7 bolts holding the transmission cover and hitch plate? I changed the fluid and installed new gasket and fluid, now I have a small pool of fluid on the floor about the size of a quarter. I originally set torque to 21 foot/pounds thinking that would be tight enough. Re-torqued today to 30 ft/lbs and still have a puddle. Afraid to keep tightening the bolts and cause damaging the gasket. I cleaned both the cover and casting with 3M pad to remove all the gasket and compound that the original owner had used. Maybe that is why he used it. Any way would like to stop the leak and any help would be appreciated.

I think 30 ftlbs is about right. The cover may be dimpled around the bolt holes. I've resorted to a thin layer of RTV on both sides of the gasket to prevent leaks.

I just changed hytran and filter this weekend.
Had to take a flap disc to the cover to get ALL of the old gasket off. And a chisel to the rear end casting. Gasket really stuck good for about an inch each side of each bolt. But loose in between bolts. After flapping the cover I used a mouse sander to take out the flap marks. Then red rtv smear on the metal surfaces, let dry a couple of hours then put on the gasket. No way they are torqued to 30lbs, more like one finger pull on the end of a 12" socket wrench, LOL. You might have a bad scratch or gouge in the cover or the casting. Can you tell if the seepage is from a bolt hole or in between? |

3/8 impact tight. only thing in a gear rearend I take a torque wrench out for is the pinion shaft nut. everything else is 3/8 impact tight.

What about the 4 bolts that hold on the tiller mount?

Same. I do like Don does..... 3/8" impact. And yes, if you MUST torque it, 30ftlbs is correct.

Guess I will have to drain into clean pan and use rtv around the case and cover. Do you thing the gasket is history since it has oil on it or salvageable and reuse?

I just clean the surfaces up best I could (which isn't as perfect as I've seen some on here), put the new gasket on, and tighten the bolts back up. Never really used a torque wrench, either. Guess I've gotten lucky so far

I did a fluid change once and there were 2 gaskets on the tranny cover for some reason.
Each bolt hole in the plate gets dimpled from torquing the bolts ,I flip it over and hit the dimples back out the other way and no leaks yet.
