Eric and I have a sort of 2072. By that I mean it is all 2072 except for an 18 hp kohler command engine and a reconfigured drive shaft to accept the above engine.
Over a month ago we split the tractor because of several leaks in the tranny and pump areas. We had drained the rear last summer and found an oil/water mix. We got as much of that nasty stuff out as we could and replaced the rear plate and put some cheaper fluid back in and ran it for a while. Last night we proceeded to remove the axle housings and a bunch of trapped water and fluid ran out. We also removed the hydro pump and found the cork gasket looked more like a spider web than a gasket. Now we are ready for seal and gasket replacement and to do the hole drilling that Sam Mac has done to allow trapped oil to drain back into the tranny. We are not really planning on using this tractor for mowing but will eventually become our "woods" tractor complete with a 2500 type winch. I know there are no pics. You all can read the narrative and think we are not so smart and pics right now may just remove all doubt. Seriously we do plan on getting some pics soon of our progress.

PaulS, when you say you are going to use your tractor in the woods,do you make a guard for the plastic hydro fan, or does that not seem to be a problem?

Chappy we have not got that far as of yet. It is a great suggestion and will get our attention as the driveshaft fan that was on it when we got it was toast and we replaced it. We for the most part will be using this tractor on skid roads/atv trails but since those fans are not real cheap and are a pain to replace a guard just may in order.

Paul
Hope you put new axle seals in it while you have it apart. I also highly recommend a set of Xtreme SGT braces for the rear end. You could use the hole that would be used for the Haban decks to hang a belly shield to protect the suction tube from getting destroyed if your going to run it in the woods.

Cubfan having both the 18 and 20 hp Kohlers I do not notice much if any difference in those two engines. I believe I read somewhere here that the 18, 20, and 22 are exactly the same engine but with different size carbs. We have not put the 18 hp to much of a test other than running around the yard to get more of the yucky fluid mixed with the cheaper Hydro fluid to drain as much of that out as we could. Erics kids also ran it quite a bit. I cannot stress enough about drilling those holes as Sam Mac showed us. Each axle had about a cup of water and oil that had no way to escape. Yes we are going to replace the axle seals while we have it down this far. Will have to think about a skid/shield for the fan and hydro tube. Those braces are also looking real good too. This tractor will not be going too much off road but a one time encounter with a hidden stump would be all it would take to do in either or both the fan and tube.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
