Default 4x4 Cub Cadet idea

I really want to make a 4x4 cub cadet for a woods/mud machine. I frequently watch the tube videos of mud mowers and I came across this green machine that a guy has been building, testing, tweaking.

http://youtu.be/EvNCDlCaFQw

I am only familiar with the shaft drive cubs, so I am looking for some input from the fella's with experience with the belt drive models. Which model do you think would be the best to start with? I know people have built a few shaft drive 4x4 cubs but I think this guy's project is easier to accomplish in a home garage. Pulley swaps to increase wheel speed will be easier than gear swaps. Any ideas/ thoughts would be appreciated. This is not yet a build thread but I wanted to get some discussion going as to what others think. I have not asked this guy which model of mower the front end came out of but some of you mower experts may know which ones have 4 wheel steer.

That's my "constructive" point. If you want a machine for "the woods and mud", buy a 4-wheeler. They're made just for that kind of stuff, I'm pretty sure. Cub Cadets....... are TRACTORS.

Cool

I've been thinking on that for a couple years now. I did see one that some guy out in Ca(?) did. He fabricated a custom transfer case and modified his trans to accept is. I think he used two rears on it, memory is a bit fuzzy. As for the woods mud machine versus a 4 wheeler, I think it would be cool as hell to have a go anywhere cub, would also come in handy in the garden, or on plow day when plowing in the mud...

I personally wouldn't waste my time tring to convert a lawn mower into a 4 wheel mud machine. Transaxles in lawn mowers are basically throw away junk.
If you watched all his YT vids he had to take it back apart and weld gears. I guess it's your personal choise. My time is more valuable that trying to convert a lawn mower into something other.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
