Default Rear PTO

Looking for info on the parts i need to make a rear pto option on one of my 3speed cubs. How does it work, or go together? If its live that means it always spinning? I have the rearcover and the pto shaft anything else i need?

It is not a live pto which means when turned on it will stop spinning when the clutch is pressed so it will work when in neutral with clutch released or when moving in gear.

Not sure on parts for conversion. Probly best to get a pro rear and swap it.

Unfortunately, you're missing the most important, hard to find, expensive piece. The top shaft in the transmission with a rear pto is different than a standard top shaft. It has a hollow, splined extension on the rear that drives the PTO. You also need the shifting mechanism. To install requires removing the current top shaft and installing the correct one. It takes a while. It's probably quicker and easier to find and install a rear end which already has a pto installed.

A Cub Cadet has a "non-live" Pto. As stated above, the pto on a Cub Cadet stops rotating any time the clutch pedal is pressed. On a "live" pto, there's a two stage clutch. Half way down disengages the ground speed and all the way down disengages the pto. An "independent" pto is operated completely independant of the tractor clutch.

Hope this helps.

The picture was posted while I was typing. Good job. The middle shaft in the picture is the one you need that it sounds like you don't have.

Guys, there is some confusion here. A LIVE PTO is one that is coupled to the motor. Period. No matter what the clutch is set up as. A NON-LIVE PTO was ground driven off a wheel of the tractor. An INDEPENDENT LIVE PTO is one that can be run independent of the transmission, as in a two-stage clutch, or hydraulically operated like IH used on the their tractors.

The rear PTO, IMHO, is worthless. There was NEVER an implement or a attchments made by Cub Cadet that could be operated by it. As stated above, it was a "non-live" feature.

If you are determined to install this on your Cub because of "cool factor".....then this will help.... Install Man

If the tractor had a creeper would that slow the pro being it's slowing the driveshaft directly or can a creeper not be put on a PTO rearend?

Since the rear PTO on a Cub Cadet is transmission driven, the creeper will slow it down.

And, Jonathan, I don't want to start a gear drive vs. hydrostat type discussion here, but I stand by my original description. A search of the web finds a general concensus like here:

http://forums.yesterdaystractors.com...c.php?t=436505

When tractor companies first came out with "live" PTO, the older tractor systems like on a Farmall H were referred to as "dead" pto's. (Yes, I'm that old.) But that description was later replaced with the "non-live" pto which is a much better description. And, yes, since they are driven off the transmission they can be considered as wheel driven. That's why an over riding clutch on the pto is a really good idea. I know of guys that have ended up in ditches or hit trees without one.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
