Default Cub Cadet 169

I recently discovered and fell inlove with the NF 169 but noticed its hydrostatic - did cub make this model in a manual with the big 16 hp Kohler??

The 169 was only manufactured as a hydrostatic and it was never made as a NF model, but a WF model. Are you sure that you are looking at a 169? Perhaps someone stuck a 169 cowl on a NF and is trying to pass it off as a 169. The 169 is a very rare (production run) model. If you find a true 169 in decent, salvageable shape, my recommendation is to acquire it. Pictures sure help us on here to properly identify cubs or at least get a lead on them....

Just curious but why is a 169 considered a NF? Few other questions - is this model equally as rare as say a 126? Did cub cadet use this single lunger 16hp in any other models? I really like the big bore 16hp but its the hydro that scares me away. Im not really a fan of them and I dont think they have the pull thst a gear drive does. I was considering a wheel horse C160 as it has the big 16 kohler in it. But yea the hydros really dont do much for me unless I have been miseducated and you guys can straighten me out

The 169 is NOT a NF tractor and never was.

IMHO, if it is truly a 169, you should get it. They are a rare and awesome model of cub cadet. If you are pulling something that this tractor cannot handle then you shouldnt pull it with any garden tractor of this size regardless of gear/hydro drive. I am not knocking wheel horse, but nothing beats a cub cadet. With this site and our sponsors you will never have an issue that cannot be easily fixed. Also, you can find the history of the models if you do a google search and it will show you the difference of narrow frame and wide frame.

To answer some of your questions, no, IH never paired the 16 with a gear drive. It can be done on your own if you want to fabricate it, but the biggest motor IH ever paired with a gear drive was the 12hp. Not sure where you're getting info that the 169 is a NF, it most definitely isn't one. it is a Wide frame, through and through. you might be thinking of a 147, which was the most powerful narrow frame that needed a frame modification to fit. I personally want to make a 167 someday, putting a 16hp K341 in a 147 frame.

That aside, cub cadet never made a 16hp narrow frame. 169 is a wide frame.

I know that you feel gear drives are quite strong (and they are), but to be honest, I think the hydro is just fine, I can't say I've known anyone to cook one. mine handled plowing very heavy snow with no issue last winter, and that was without being opened up and worked on since it came off the production line. but, everyone has their preference.

Hey guys....sorry for the typo but I meant to say why is it NOT a nf but now that I have a picture everything makes perfect sense. I've always been a fan of the gear drives and of course shaft drive over belt drives.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
