Default K-161 Rebuild ?

Rebuilding the 161 in my original. In the tear down phase and appears .010 bore and crank grind will do nicely. Have it completely disassembled except for the govenor gear and gov arm shaft along with the pto side main bearing. Bearing is smooth with no discernible wear and don't want to damage pressing it out.Should I pull the gov gear and arm shaft as well as the one main bearing before I take it for machine work? This is my first Kohler but am fairly handy with the wrenches. Thanks for your advice.

you have to take it apart. all that material from boring and honing is tough to get out of the block and probably next to impossible to get out of the bearing and governor

Interestingly I looked at the oem packaging for a new govenor gear assembly. Stated the 161 does not utilize the washer made me happy as I thought I had dropped or otherwise lost mine.

the gear plastics ok after 50 yrs?

ford used a nylon toothed cam gear on alot of its engines from the late 60's to the mid 80's......i have had to repair 40,000 mile engines because the teeth came off the cam gear and clogged the oil pump pickup.......have even heard of a 302 in a 81 lincoln self destruct when the chain jumped.

A governor gear isn't quite the same as a cam gear. Not really any load on a governor.....
