Default My new 147

Just picked this old gal up yesterday. I traded even up for my old 125 with a 38" mower deck. Runs like a top. Puffs a little black smoke on start up but I think the carb needs to be gone through and adjusted. Lights, spring assist and a set of IH weights on it. It has 2 different places to check the oil. This is my first 14hp so I dont know if that something different Kohler did. Here are a few pics of my new gal.

Good looking tractor Kelly! And a good trade to boot!! A 147 is supposed to have the dipstick on the RH side. I'd say either someone changed engines, or cam covers.

Kelly

The 147 I fixed up last year had the dip stick next to the points and the oil fill was up top like your tractor. A before and after of that one.

That was all it was used for the last 15 yrs was pushing snow. The chains were on year round. Mower deck rotted out and they never replaced it. The guy wanted another cub to mow with because his box store junker didn't even last him 10 yrs.

You may want to check out the "dipstick" on the top of the engine, 147's had a dipstick in the cam cover and a "fill tube" on the top. The fill tube should have a short stick in it.

However, if someone along the way has removed the balance gears, they may have replaced the short stick with a longer one.

Congratulations, 147's are great machines!

That is really interesting about the two oil/dipstick holes. I looked at the parts book and it shows a long dipstick on the RH side, and just a cam cover. Just goes to show, sometimes the books aren't always right! Or, they changed it in the latter years, after the book was printed.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
