Default Cub 109 breather

Is it normal for a very slight bit of smoke out of the breather on my 109? The motor was rebuilt a few years back with not an excessive amount of time on it. There is never any smoke out of the exhaust and oil usage is very minimal. Figured someone here wile chime in.

I'm not an engine expert, but I believe that it is normal. I use pure synthetic oils in my cubs and have had little if any smoke from them. What oil are you using?

This is normal. The cankcase vent on these old Kohlers is vented to the atmosphere, unlike the motors of today. The EPA deemed this "harmful" and all motors now, vent into the air breather. That is why your not used to seeing all other engine's "smoke", because it is fed back into the engine.

This K301 engine is a very low hour machine, I got it with 61 hours, it now has 65 hours.

Notice the tube from the breather to the carb. This is a late 1970's machine (I believe)

The inside of that tube has no oil in it. I guess as it gets older, more oil vapor will be produced, but, to answer your question, I do not think there should be any smoke out of the breather.

If it were normal, the vented machines would have shown oil on the side of the engines, and buyers would have been back complaining about them.

You can buy an aftermarket breather cover like the one on my machine.

Hook a hose to it, run it into the air filter, you will not see anymore smoke.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
