Default K301A crank at 1.495 inches. Need to grind?

Blew up the Kohler 12 in my 129 recently and am rebuilding. My machinist says the crank looks very clean, and is only .0007" out of round, but is worn to 1.495" at it's smallest point.

I'm on an extremely tight budget right now, and if I could save $120 on grinding the crank .010", I really need to. Can I get a few years out of it like this, with a new stock size rod?

Your crank is already .004 past the max wear limit and .0002 past the out of round spec per the Kohler manual. I myself would not be willing to take that chance of putting new parts on an already out of spec crank and risk blowing it up again. Just my thoughts on the matter. By the way welcome to OCC.

I know what the Kohler wear specs say, but could I likely get a few years out of it as is, before it'd blow again?

I did something similar a few years ago and ended up tearing the engine down and getting the crank reground anyway after a few operator hours. Then I had to buy a new 10 under connecting rod and a whole slew of gaskets and seals all over again.

If it were me and I weren't in a time crunch, I'd shop around and find the best price I could find on a regrind, and in the meantime save up some $ until I could afford it and a connecting rod. I think I got mine reground for $50. My machinist sent it off to some place in Terre Haute Ind. Unfortunately I never got the name.

If it's under spec, don't waste your money. Get it ground or a new crank. PERIOD.

I agree with the others. Get the crank ground and in the long run, it will be cheaper.

its worn pretty bad. problem is once they fit loose they accelerate the wear. it gets to a point that the rod fits loose enough the film of oil can't do its job and the bearing will start to gall. if your lucky you just ruin the rod , if your not you ruin the block when the rod parts company with the crank
