Default Cub 127 won't start

Hey Guys,

I bought a Cub Cadet 127 at the beginning of the summer. I put a new battery in it, changed the oil and filed these contact things (that have something to do with it getting spark) and cleaned the carburetor. It was working great until about three weeks ago when it started to loose top speed and power, and also backfired like crazy. Also right on the left site of the carburetor there's a little vent, and smoke or steam was coming out of that too. I also noticed that the exhaust was VERY hot. A lot hotter then usual. So today and yesterday I cleaned the carburetor out a few times and double checked everything that had to do with fuel and everything checked out. Then I moved on to seeing if the motor got spark and it was. I also checked where the motor connects to the carburetor was sucking in a pretty good amount but no real hard. I still cant get it to start at all. I tried spraying gas into the carburetor and all it does now is back fire out of the carburetor. Not loud, its just like little poofs, and also some white vapor, or smoke comes out of the exhaust too. If anyone know what the problem may be it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks-Kevin

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you should probably find yourself a mechanic.

There are three things that will cause an old Kohler "K" Series to get hot...

Not enough air flow across the fins. Resolve: Clean behind ALL engine tins and between fins

Being out of time. Resolve: Clean or replace points and set timing.

Running too lean. Can be caused by a number of things, but ultimately, too much air in combustion chamber.

Welcome to my world kelvin! My 1200 has been giving me fits about starting, it has power at top end no back firing or blow by coming out. Going to replace the points, plug and plug wire this weekend and switch carbs and see what happens. If I don't have any luck mine may go to the mechanic too. I know a retired IH mechanic who has a small shop. Just afraid she may be worn out and the short block that was supposed to have been put in it back in 94 (it sat from 97 till 2012) was never put in it. Good luck, let us know what you find out!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
