The manual said (to my understanding) that the trans and the rear axle uses the same 30 weight as the motor- shouldn't the rear end require thicker oil?

Depends on your model. Some say SAE30, most are Hytran. I'm sure someone else will chime in with links but in the Technical section there is a page that tells all on this, what models uses what I mean.

I have read several discussion threads regarding oil on this site. All answers are different depending on who you ask. Most guys reccomend HyTran, some only use the expensive IH brand HyTran and others buy an off brand from Rural King/TSC/Farm Fleet.

I'm a firm believer in using only Cub Cadet Hy-Tran in my IH Cub Cadet 71, and 72. I also use only Cub Cadet engine oil, and Cub Cadet Gear oil as well. Been accused of being a "loyalist" , which that I am!
Though, many other Only Cub Cadet Members will say they have good results with different oils other than Hy-Tran which is good too! ![]()

I have a 102 that was built in 1965. The manual says to use straight 30 weight motor oil in the tranny. I have used both 30 weight oil and 80/90 gear oil and have had no problems. I would presume that with our winters here in central PA the gear oil would be pretty thick. We just drained the rear the other day in prep to paint the rear and the plan is to put 30 wt oil back in. Of course our experience has only lasted since 1975 when I bought this tractor so it has been a kinda short term test.
