Default Electrical woes with 782

Here's the story: I went out to mow the lawn and the battery was dead. When I hooked up a jumper, the starter began spinning (bendix not engaged).
I took the starter off and cleaned the bendix, and got a new battery. When I hooked it all up, the starter began running with the ignition switch off. The ignition switch and the terminal were pretty much melted. Needing a new switch and not wanting to wait for one, I picked up a generic starter switch at the 'Zone. It's been running fine for several weeks, but it's not charging. I ordered and installed a new regulator, but it didn't solve the starting problem. After installing the new regulator and nothing else, the ignition switch did nothing. Lawn is tall, so I shorted across the solenoid and mowed most of the lawn - until the PTO switch decided not to do anything.

I've seen some simplified wiring diagrams, but does anyone have a complete diagram that shows the regulator, whatever that can is with 5 terminals, etc?
When I bought it, the previous owner told me there were wiring issues.

Thanks, Roland.

Yes, I did look at that diagram, it's a good one, and the best I've found.

There is a metal can that looks like an automotive circuit breaker or flasher; It's mounted to the left side of the tractor body behind the engine, below the PTO switch. Do you know what it is? I'll get a picture of it in daylight.

There are some wires that have been cut; perhaps from safety switches. I guess I need to just get out the multimeter and trace everything. Good thing I know how to troubleshoot and consider it kind of fun.

The PO of my 782 sliced and diced the wiring harness so that half of it drags behind the left tire....don't know how it even ran when I picked it up. In desperation, I broke down and bought a replacement harness. Hope yours isn't doctored up as bad and that your problem is resolved quickly. Keep us posted and good luck!

Well, looking at the correct diagram helped. There was a set of wires to the seat safety that had been connected together with a wire nut. This had come loose. In addition, the solenoid was fried. Fixed those two issues, and now it runs like a champ.
