I'm looking at the 2 100's I have out in my garage and I'm wondering when in production they started making changes to the 100's or are some of these differences PO mods. The 100 I just got home is older and has a larger battery box than the one I already had. It also has a different steering wheel, longer starter button, the headlight mounting bolts are backward of the other one and the casting is different around the headlights. One has a serial number of 113105 and the other is either 67726 or 87726 I can't see the first digit very well.
These are the first 100's I've ever had a close look at. |

I have a 100 serial#76909 ( feb.'64)with big battery box and old style metal spoke steering wheel. I have a 100 serial #86783 (may '64) with big battery box and newer plastic coverd spoke steering wheel. I have a 100 serial#122317 (june'65) with small battery box and newer style plastic spoke steering wheel. So,I am guessing the older 100's had big battery boxes and metal spoke steering wheels, then IH changed steering wheels, then changed battery boxes.
I have never seen one of those long starter buttons.

Looks like a homemade light panel on the one with the painted yellow foot rest or it is upside down.Do you have a picture of it from the front?
Also the button is not correct. It should be short like the other one.the steering wheel and front casting was changed during production . Did you notice any difference in the front axles?

I didn't look too closely at the front axle. I did notice a bolt on top of the drag link arm that the newer one doesn't have. I assumed it was PO mod. it's visible in the 3rd pic.

Several of the models have subtle differences. As they were changing stock, they used up the old stock first and then ran the new stock....like on the 123's, some of the 12hp Kohlers have the oil dipstick on the side and some have it by the S/G, under the hood. The originals had a lot of differences, too....perhaps the most, but hey---a cub is a cub!!

IIRC, the only production changes that IH made during the 100's, was the size of the battery box. Other than that......I would venture to say the other differences are PO mods.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
