Default Help! 2166 problems
I have a 2166 with 324 hours on it. It mows like a brand new mower for an hour. After that the engine sputters and will not idle until I disengage the blades (pto). I have had it to the local and reputable Cub Cadet dealer. In town. They can not find anything wrong with mower. After I disengage the blades and idle for 4 or 5 minutes I re-engage the blades and I am able to finish mowing. The mower runs again like a new mower the next week until an hour of mowing.

You have a "charging" problem. You weaken the battery reserve to the point where you haven't got enough power to supply the ignition system. Once you turn the PTO load off, there is enough to maintain ignition. Usually the Cub Cadet charging systems are rated at 15A, I am guessing you are well below that.

?????? Thanks for reply. What's a person to do when the dealer says it is charging fine? It has a new battery.

I may be wrong but I think you have a fuel supply issue. The 2166 has electronic ignition. I’ve seen more 2000 series with bad fuel lines that I care to talk about. The ethanol in the gas degrades the liner on the inside and the hose can collapse and starve the engine for fuel. You say it will run OK with no load but once the PTO is turned on it will sputter after a while leads me to think it is not getting the amount of fuel it needs. Things to check, 1 plugged gas cap vent, 2 fuel filter, 3 junk in the gas tank blocking the fuel outlet, 4 fuel lines from the tank to the carb, 5 carb may need to be cleaned or rebuilt, 6 fuel pump could be getting tired. Your tractor is at the age that these issues start to show up.

So, just to clarify........Are you saying the motor won't idle when the Elec PTO is engaged, but the engine runs OK, IF you disengage (turn off) the PTO? That you have NO problems of any sort as long as the PTO is not running...???

While mowing after an hour or so the mower spits and sputters like it is running out of fuel. Once I disengage the blades (pto) the mower will run fine. I idle for four or five minutes then I can finish my yard. It will do tjis 2 or 3 times each week.

No that is only time, when pto is running. If I don't turn pto off and let it sputter too long it will die.

So, as I understand it, this issue only happens when the PTO is engaged.

(A) Do you have a DVM or VOM.....????

(B) If so, are you familiar with the proper use of them...???
