On my 147, I just spent an hour trying to get something to hold or turn the tension nut on the hydro lever friction discs. I tried my small vise grips, small and medium Channel locks, fingers, swearing, no luck. The steering shaft and the wiring harness prevent me from getting my hands in there while seeing the work.
Someone suggested a crow's foot wrench. Does anyone know for sure what size the nut is? The service manual says use a wedge. I can't figure out what to use, or how. I might fit something between the nut and the steering column. Has anyone found a wedging technique? Any other tips? Thanks Jason |

I took my whole dash apart to do it. It took an hour or two but works great now. Set it a little tighter than you think it should be and lube it up with a little silicone spray it will loosen up as you use it some.

I cut off a wrench I think it was the 1 1/4 or 1 1/8 I dont remember. Mine would not change the tension ether way. I had to pull the whole thing out and hammer it apart because it was so rusted up.

Where do you get those heads at? I heated up and bent a 1" cheap China wrench and it was too small, my larger sizes are craftsmans that I'd rather not bend. I got a 147 trying to tighten that nut up

Right on, thanks fellas! I took off the console on a parts 127 and found the nut is a 1 1/16. I'll check harbor freight and/or Sears both are fairly close proximity to each other when I get out that way, too nice today

Yeah it's a 1 1/16th. I tightened mine last year on my 147. Went to a hardware store and bought just that one size crows foot wrench and it did the trick.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
