The 800 I picked up last weekend has a whine to it when the clutch is engaged in any gear. If I engage the clutch in neutral there is no whine.
The PO swapped out the trans and it still whines. It just so happened that Duke ended up with the original trans out of it and was really nice and let me have it. Anyone have any advice for me to pinpoint what the exact problem is? |

My 800 has the exact same issue. It will whine in each gear, except in neutral it is fine. It hasn't bothered me enough to look into it though.

when you are in N the reduction gears and top shaft are rotating when the clutch is out. if it does it in any gear that would leave you with the frt or rear pinion shaft bearing. whine off of the ring and pinion or the bearing on each end of the carrier or axle ends. I've found ring and pinion settings to cause a whine, bad bearings, seen the rear pinion bearing move back and run against the pinion, seen it move forward and rub against the spacer, I don't think I've seen the brakes cause issues with whining but I have heard whining from several drivers or their significant other.

Seems odd that both trans would whine.

I figured the higher HP gear drive tractors would "whine" more due to more power and potential for wear. But, I'm no tranny expert. |

What are the odds of 2 whiners back to back. I believe Paul said the donor trans came out of a 108. |

Does the wine change depending on what gear it's in? In other words does it change the faster the wheels turn?

![]() The pitch of the whine goes up the faster I go. There is no whine when going down hill and it's more or less coasting in gear. |

Sounds like a bad/out of spec ring and pinion. You can pretty much eliminate a bad bearing because when you coast, it goes away. Try with it jacked up and see if it still whine's when there is no load on the drive train. Also any noise in reverse? We rebuild all types of rear axles/ ring and pinion set-ups, and a whine is annoying, but rarely causes a failure of any kind. Usually, once a rear end starts whining the only way to eliminate it is to replace the ring and pinion. This is because the two gears are made as a unit to run only together. They are, for lack of a better term, "honed to fit together" if you understand. When they start to whine, usually because they have either: ran too low on oil and got hot, or were taken apart and not reassembled right. You can try to readjust them, but usually the whine stays. Take the rear cover off and look at the gears. Do they look like they are worn? If not, if you can stand the noise, I'd just deal with it. Too much $$ to spend for a whine IMO.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
