A new tractor just popped up in my area. I don't know that much about the quietline series so I thought I'd ask before I pay too much.
What I can tell -Quietline series, gear drive with creeper gear (model 1000 or 1200?) -It's been repainted (possibly restored?) -Front plow looks like it's a craftsman plow or something, not sure. -Ad says it ran two years ago, but he can't get it to start (engine won't crank). -Asking $1200 obo. It's about an hour from me and I really would like a tiller for a large garden. I've read about the iso mounts, but what other possibilities are there for common problems? How can I tell if this has a Kohler or a briggs engine? I'll be able to tell if I go look at it, but just wondering if anyone can tell from this picture. What do you think it's worth, and what should I offer? I'm kinda thinking start offering $600 to $700 not running, but I'm not sure. I also have a plow, cultivator, and disc that would work for this if I can get my hands on a sleeve hitch adapter.

The only good way to put this is save the hour drive and wait for the next one. Somebody will turn that into a puller. Whoever painted it stay away from my house!

Yep, $1200 is way too much. Probably a good price to pay if it's running great and had a good paint job.
A 149 sold here locally, the guy couldn't get it running and didn't know what was wrong. Came with a tiller, front blade and deck. All for $250.

Here is what I'm seeing: -I'd rather have a hydrostat (but that's just me. Nothing against the gear drives, they are equally wonderful.) -Repainted yes. Repainted wrong, over spray on tires, indicative of a poor job. -Craftsman plow- probably works, but I'd rather it be IH (especially for $1200) -Engine won't run? That opens up a whole can of worms; it could be something simple or something huge. Usually it's the latter. -Does it say anything about the side shields? I didn't see them in the pics. -If it was "restored" it would 1)run well 2) be worth the asking price 3)be painted correctly and 4) would have all the parts. For me, I wouldn't give over 300 either. If the seller denies, run as fast as you can.

I'll call him and offer $250 for it sometime soon. He'll probably say no, but the last thing I want is an expensive project. I've done that before and learned my lesson.
Thanks for all the input you guys!!! I'll definitely post if I end up getting it.

I would think if you're willing to pay 1200 you shouldn't have any problem finding a super nice QL with attachments that needs absolutely no work at all.

If you are wanting to be able to use a tiller and have hydro, then I would highly suggest finding a Cub with hydro and hydraulic lift, such as a WF 149/169, a QL 1450/1650, or my favorite, a 782.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
