Default PTO Question

Hello,
This past fall I rebuilt my pto, went by the directions used the gage that was supplied.I also replaced the the wear button.I only ran the tractor for about 1 1/2 hours tilling the garden.I notice now that the wear button is wore clear through.Please take a look at my pictures and let me know if something does not look right. Thanks for your help.

I'm not expert but the spring plate looks to be too big and backwards. Did you put in an narrow frame clutch? What type of material is the wear button?

Two things I see: The PTO looks like it is slightly forward on the shaft, since the allen screw holes seem to be slightly forward on your shaft as compared to my 124 (as you know, the set screws tighten BEHIND the bearing, not ON the bearing). This could be a problem. Also, the PTO spring is a type B which is used on a Wide Frame tractor.

Which tractor do you have?

The wear button is a fiber button, and should not even touch the PTO button while the tiller is running. Make sure that you have adjusted the linkage so that the wear button does not touch the PTO button when the PTO is running (maybe .03 or so inches). Otherwise, the wear button will get worn down.

Still, that is a strange wear pattern on the wear button. It looks like it has a pit worn into it! I'd replace it with a new one. The wear button should be evenly worn across its surface, with no pit like is shown in your pic. The PTO button is worn smoothly across its surface, and the wear button should fit the PTO button like a glove. After looking again at the PTO button, I'd replace it also.

Looks like he has a wide frame as the frame rails are present in the picture.
Your button on the clutch should be super smooth, any rust or grooves in it will wear out the fiber button out lickety split.The pto arm should be checked to see if it is in alignment with the pto clutch also.

That's the wrong spring for that style of clutch. That spring goes on the kind that has 3 notches around the periphery for the spring tabs to fit into.

Yeah, I think you're right...those notches are for the brake disc on the brake style clutch. Never mind.

Thanks for the replys.Here is some more info.The pto is on my 149.The rebuild kit i used is IH 759-3489.It has 2 spring plates.I also replaced the thrust button,the 3 throw out levers,and the 3 springs.The button is the fiber one.The bearing spun nice and smooth so I did not replace it.I adjusted the wear button with a feeler gage at .015.I thinking I might have the set screws tight on the od of the bearing instead of behind it.Will dig deeper today after work.Thanks again.

The PTO has a circlip near the front where the crankshaft fits against. Make sure the PTO is all the way back so the crank end is up against the circlip. Then install your set screws.

you should also be running with yur pto engaged all the time when no attachment is installed on the tractor. and as others have said, check the clearance between the buttons when not engaged. have you watched the pto when engaging? does it stop pretty quick or take a bit to stop? might need some adjustment so its fully disengaging right away.
