Question Soaking up info

Friday, .I brought my new (to me) 1650 home and since then I've been reading all the posts I could find on the Quietline series. I'm hoping to make myself aware of the common problems so I can be at least a little pro active. So far the biggie seems to be the ISO engine mounts. I'll be checking mine asap. One post mentioned using straight pulleys in the mule drive instead of the angled ones. I'm going to need some help with that one. Can someone explain the difference to me and why it matters? Chewed up belts were mentioned............I hope to avoid that. Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Straight angled pulleys were used on the 38, 42, & 48 inch mower decks.

Angled pulleys were used on the newer 44 & 50 inch mower decks.

Thanks for the information. I have a 50 inch deck and so I quess the mule drive I have is for that deck. I bought the tractor more for the tiller and blade than the mower deck. Will the mule drive I have be alright with the tiller?

You need the 38/42 mule drive for the tiller.

Thanks, Methos. How do I identify the 38/42 mule drive? How are the two different?

They are the same mule drive. They will not have any angle to the pulleys. With you having a 50" deck you need the angled pulleys for that so I would not try to straighten the mule drive. When I was looking for mine I placed a want ad in the wanted section of the site and was able to get one shipped to me for $45. I tried modifying a 50 mule drive but broke the belt after 10 mins of tilling. That was a $65 mistake.

I'm going to move this to the attachment section as we've veered into that direction.

Thanks again, and my condolences for your short lived belt. I'm going to assume that the angle in the pulleys is enough to see so I can tell whether or not I have the angled one. Can I also assume that the 50" deck can be run with the straight mule drive so it's possible I already have the straight one? I ask that because the PO obviously used the tiller as it still has dirt on the tines. I don't want to make a 65.00 assumption, however.

Post a pic of your mule drive. The 50" uses angled pulleys. I still cry over that first belt.

Methos. Here are a couple of pics of my mule drive. After looking at it again I think I see the angularity on the pulley with the J bolt used for adjustment......is that correct? Thanks again.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
