Default Squealing PTO Clutch

After replacing the two idler pulleys on the mule drive to my 1440, I've reduced the metal-to-metal squealing when my mower deck is in operation (shot bearings in pulleys). The remaining squealing/grinding is coming from the 18 year old PTO clutch at the point of engagement and disengagement. Are there any lube points on the clutch and if so, where? If not, can it be adjusted? If not, does that necessitate a new $200+ clutch? Everything works fine but the high-pitch metal-on-metal noise has got to go!

Much thanks in advance,

ccguy

Your PTO clutch bearing may be failing.

Default Squealing PTO Clutch

Thanks Mike:

I replaced the entire clutch and the noise is gone! The clutch I replaced is 6 years old and looks like it's in good condition -- is there any way I can replace the bearings to the old unit and if so, any idea who sells the bearings?

ccguy, just do a little digging right here in the CCC/MTD Cub Cadet built Tractors (GT) section and you will find a bunch of information. My Dad and I replaced the bearing in his PTO clutch, (2084) and it is very easy but you may have to do a bunch of looking for the bearing. Hope that helps!

Any idea where you got the bearing for the 2084 clutch?

Mike, lucky for us we have a place local that carries things just like this and many old things. The place is Milesburg auto electric and they just about have everything you could think of. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

That local shop that EricR referred to does have quite a stock of the old stuff or the bit unusual stuff. They can even get the voltage regulators needed on the old tractors. It is a relief to go to a store and they know what you are talking about. I'll look to see if I have the part number or the id of the bearing we used.

Thanks.

CC doesn't list a bearing for that clutch, just a pulley assembly w/bearing at over $100!

Just about any industrial supply or machine shop would have the bearing, when I replaced mine, I took it to a local shop here in St. Joe, Mo; Jamison Machine. The guy looked at the number imprinted on it, went in the back and returned with a new one, it took him about 30 seconds. It cost me less than 14 dollars.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
