Default Rebuilt engine questions

I've rebuilt the 14 horse in one of my 1450s. The engine has about 1 &1/2 hour run time. I've noticed it smokes on start up, then stops. Is this normal? I didn't replace the valve guides. Also, I have re-torqued the head 4 times. 2 of the bolts are staying @ 30 ft/lbs. The rest seem to back off to 20-25 ft/lbs. Is it time to break out the Loc-Tite?

You may see some smoke for the first few hours until the rings seat.

As far as the head bolt torque, did you replace the head bolts? Loc-tite will do nothing to stop this.

No, I didn't replace the head bolts. Didn't know I should have.

CD

I would have replaced the head bolts. When we order a new head gasket from kohler on the new eng's they send everything you need from exaust gaskets to new head bolts.

The guides could be worn too

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
