From time to time I see a CC 1641 come-up for sale. Prices are generally pretty good.
What's the good, bad and ugly about these tractors? I believe they have a hydro-gear tranny vs sunstrand. Is this a negative? Are they suitable for moldboard plowing? I like the cyclops look of the tractors and prices seem to be reasonable too. Any info would greatly be appreciated. Thanks! Bill |

My daddy has a 1641, and they are the heavy built type garden tractors.. however I noticed is does not have the lift point on the right side of rock shaft, there are a few other small things that I don't care for about it, however they would make a outstanding over heavy duty grass cuter, but not what one would look for for plowing or any real heavy duty type work. Also a older type hydro with sunstrand transmission and the early cub cadet rear end, or the latter aluminum, and even the next type of aluminum with the next type being the axle carrier type which the 1641 is, however this rear seems to hold up just fine for many, but I'm not as sure about the pump type on the 1641.

I saw a 1641 at the CC dealer today being serviced. I can't explain it, but I like the look of the cyclops tractors. They must have been a big seller.
Thanks, Bill |

The 1641 is a good tractor but probably not something you would want to use to plow with. Mowing grass, pushing snow OK but I think you want a little more tractor if your going to hang a plow off the back end. Where in VA are you?

Sam - I'm near Roanoke. Are you the one with the 129 on Craigslist? I've spent many nights camped at the Old Fiddlers Convention at Galax in years past.
Thanks, Bill |

My neighbor gave me an 1861 which required some "updates"!!
![]() It mows great, but, when my son-in-law is mowing with it over a 1/4 mile away, I can hear the hydro whine over the mower and the engine!! I pull a cart with it, but, not much more. The PO didn't even have a cart, just 900 hours of mowing. I prefer the earlier hydros'. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
