Default New motor

Ok i have a chance to get a kohler magnum 18. The motor, if i am reading it right was made in 1990. Used very little, if at any at all.

It is going to cost me $100.00 dollars plus my B&S 16.

What all will i have to change to put this motor in my 582?

Motor Model # M18S, Spec. # 24582, Serial # 2005008836.

The Kohler motor was made for a company called "Promark". They made a line of Chipper/Shredders and Vacuums. Promark. It is now owned by Ariens.

I would suggest, that you compare the spec numbers of this motor to a Cub Cadet Spec'd M-18 (24506) to see what the variants are. This may or may not work.

If the setups are the same, then you could mirror the parts from a 682/782 and make a minor wiring modification.

Default M18S Motor

I got the new to me Kohler M18S motor on the 582 over the weekend. I had to make a clutch adaptor plate. Wiring worked out ok also. I was lucky with the electric pto, same shaft size. Had to rework the exuast pipe off of the muffler. The motor had verry little time on it. Runs great and mowes better than before. Uses less gas than the 16 briggs. Now i have to make the muffler shroud for it. Best $100.00 that i have spent in a long time.:biggrin2.gif:

I was at a plowday over the weekend and a m18 powered 582 was there and I have to say that it did a incredible job. It was flying through the field. Good luck with yours, I'm sure you're going to love it. Now if you find anymore m18 for $100, let me know because my 682 need a transplant too.

Default Kohler Motor

A guy at Church told me yesterday that he had a 20 hp kohler for sale. He wanted $400.00 for it.

We are pretty sure that the M18 that i got might have been started once.
Motor had the original oil filter on it. Motor was painted a nice red color. I did pull heads off to look at piston and valves. Looked like they were brand new. No wear on the cylinder walls or the valves. So i did ok.:biggrin2.gif:

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
