Default Snow thrower questions

This is a QA 42A Snow Thrower. I believe it was previously used on an 82 series tractor. It had the 5/8 inch pulley. I plan to restore this unit and use it on a model 149.

Is this lift bracket factory original, or is it a PO modification?

This transfer shaft is showing some wear. Should it be replaced? I ask because the part is a bit pricey.

That is not the original lift bracket - the originals are quite a bit shorter and don't bend out - I'm sure he bent those out to clear the side panels on his x82. I like these snow throwers - hard to beat and they do a good job.

Good luck!

Do you think it will work on my 149, or should I start looking for replacement?

Transfer Shaft
Might want to check the bearings there, and the shaft diameter, replace as necessary.

This is a major concern for me right now. Is this shaft supposed to move freely?

The chain sprocket and what you call the transfer shaft are both totally shot...someone with a mill and lathe could easily make a new shaft and modify an available sprocket to work.

ya i Just rebuilt me QA42A this fall. and $300 dollors later. I put on a new chain, adjustment piece, all new bearings, new flanges, two new sprockets. Your looking for parts go to CCspecalite.org they are very helpful. and if you need up close pictures i can do so.

Default QA 42A Problems

DSCN1573 RS.jpg

The sprocket on the auger is welded on. I now have the bearings and collars off. The shaft (spindle) end is loose and will fall inside the auger tube, if you let it. I know this can't be correct.

How is the sprocket supposed to attach to the auger? If it is welded, what is the proper length of the spindle?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
