Default 782 or 1282....which one to buy?

I am pressed on my decision....do I buy a red 1282 in great shape without a hydraulic lift or a red 782 that has set outside, no side panels, but without the side panels and a couple of other small parts, but with a hydraulic lift? Both are priced the same....have to travel further for the 782? This would be my first red one!

Thanks in advance for your comments....

That is easy to answer!! Both!!

Always pick up the further one first, no use hauling the close one all the way to the second pick up. That saves you fuel.

We are here to help save you money!!

First of all, is the 782 IH built and what motor does it have? Do both run? If the 782 has a series II non-ventilated with a connecting rod, I'd go with it. Even if it's a CCC built one, I'd pick it over the 1282. The side panels are easy to find and the series II can be rebuilt. If the 782 has the series I and is non-running, I'd lean towards the 1282 if you are wanting to buy something now. If you can wait, hold out for a 782. The hydraulic lift and twin cylinder makes for a nice tractor. . Keep us posted and of course post a pic when ya decide which one to go for.

I think it would especially depend on how you plan on using it. If mowing is its sole purpose, then the 1282 would be my choice by the way you have described these two tractors. If you plan on using it in the garden, or going to plowdays etc, where lifting is done often, you most definitly want the hydro lift. Im so thankful to have it. I see guys using the manual lift at plow days and I dont know how they make it through the day. And doesnt the 782 have front hydraulic hook ups?? Thats also a bonus. They also came standard with hubcaps so those are always nice if it still has them on it.

Just my $0.12... It was 2 cents, but everything is going up these days....

I think you need to buy the 782 and tell me where the 1282 is. I need a 1282 for my collection.

To be honest, the way it sounds, I think I would go with the 1282. It sounds like it has been better cared for. I have a fear of 782's that have been setting outside and missing parts. You can always add hydraulic lift to the 1282. You can usually buy a entire hydraulic lift setup for about $150 for the red ones.

Here are the pics of the 782....and the 1282 (better condition), and both run--no smoke.

The 782 has an oil filter, which means it isn't a series I. It also appears to be IH-built. The 1282 looks like it was repainted in a hurry, and there's something goofy going on with the headlight area of the nosepiece by the looks of your pics. I'd rather have the 782.

I think with a good wash and buff that 782 would pry shine like that 1282. 782 looks like the better deal.

I'm liking the 782 also, it looks as if the hood has been bolted to the nose piece. But I agree with Matt, the 1282 has had a quick once over. Not in a good way.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
