Default Hydro affecting starting??

Guys, I took my 149 to a buddy to take a look at my engine because it never wanted to start with out starter fluid. After it was running it continued to run fine with with good power. We ended up working on the valves as they weren't closing properly and he thought that was why it would loose enough vacuum so it wouldn't start right. Also we only had about 25 pounds of compression in the cylinder. He thought it should be higher. (The rings are good.) Now, he said he tried to start it and it wanted to drive away from him. (first time this has happened).
He and I were wondering if something with the hydro unit could not be disengaging properly and drawing power when trying to start the engine? The trans seems to work fine. Thanks, Mark

Sounds like the hydro linkage is out of adjustment. Is the parking brake set when it's being started?

I'm not really sure what you mean, could you be more specific? I dont think he had the brake set though. He did say when he tried to stop it with the foot brake it didn't want to stop. Thanks, Mark

Did your Cub wanted to drive away before you and your buddy work on the engine?

The pump does not disencage when you try to start it. You have to have a clutch from a manual trans Cub to disengage the hydro trans. As stated in a different post the hydro linkage needs adjusted.

You have an auto compression release that is going to make it look like your compression is down.

Do any of you guys ever experience your hydro cub wanting to get away from you when starting? Is this maybe a problem that is common? Just wondering. He was wondering if that would slow down the starter a little or make it more difficult for the engine to start? And thanks about the auto comp release, I hadn't known about that. Thanks, mark

I have experienced some creep with my tractors - shouldn't burden the engine so much that it wouldn't start easily. If it's more than creep, I would say that your hydro linkage is definately out of adjustment. If it is still trying to creep with the brake pedal depressed, you need to adjust your cam bracket. This procedure can be found in the service manual for your tractor in the technical section.

Cam bracket adjustment is on pg. 2-57 (pg. 80 in the pdf.)

I have a 125 ( 12 hp hydro ). If the engine isn't tuned properly, I have a difficult time starting it. Properly tuned it fires right off.

Default hydro hard starting

you may want to get a manual ,and go through the adjustments ,,as for the low compression ,it wont show very good ,because of the c/r ,holds the exhaust valve stays open till you reach 600 rpm ,thats where the low compression comes in ,however 25 is low ,,if you want a true test ,roll the engine over back wards ,and that will tell you whats going on ,now if your c/r spring is bad ,or broke ,it will be hard to start ,but you will have good compression . there is also a tab on the c/r that holds the exhaust open from .030 to .o43 ,this should be right ,.the only way to check thids is to remove the head ,and use a dial . gope this helps . Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
