1450 fuel tank problem

Last year I purchased a new fuel gauge. No problems with it going on & off. This year it won't thread on properly. I have tried turning it backwards to get the treads to seat staright, but that doesn't work either. Cap screws on like it's cross threaded, but the threads in the cap and on the tank look good. Any ideas before I look for a new tank?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester.
