Question K321 Rebuild

I have a 1250 with a K301 that is smoking like crazy. I have replaced the head gasket but the smoke came back. Rather than spending the effort on rebuilding the K301 I found a K321 with a broken rod and a standard size piston on craigslist for $35.

I plan on rebuilding the K321 and dropping it in my 1250. How much should I anticipate spending on parts to rebuild the K321? I see rebuild kits on ebay for around $90 but surely there are other parts I will need.

Guessing I will go .001 under on the crank and .001 over on the piston. The engine did not come with a carb or a starter but I can use the ones on my K301.

Don't order parts until you have had a chance to pull that motor apart and correctly inspect and measure with the right tools the size of the bore and the size of the crank pin to know how much needs to be removed. With that said, I think I had maybe $200 in parts for the K301 in my 128. I replaced the valve guides, valves, rod, piston and all the gaskets. Do make sure you get a Kohler head gasket. The after market ones will not last at all. They don't usually have the fire ring that the Kohler gasket has. I also tossed the cheap aluminum oil pan and ordered a good cast iron oil pan. Carb kit, new governor gear and governor bushing.

I just had a K241 come back for the machine shop this week. Total bill including shop work was around $300 to $325. Motor still needs assembled. This does not include a carb kit. I did have to replace the exhaust valve and guide.

The crank pin usually needs to go .010 under and cylinder bore .010, .020 or .030 oversize.

Don't order any parts until you have motor apart and check the crank and cylinder bore.

A K321 takes a #30 carb. A K301 has a #26 carb. Your carb from a K301 will work......odds are it will be on the lean side.

I would budget at least $400 for the machining and the parts. Yes have everything measured first by you or your machine shop. The kits on line are good value. Lots of differing opinions. Stens is a very good brand used by lots of pullers in high performance engines. I do have some rebuild pictures and info on a thread about the 147 restoration if you need it.
Regards,
Chris

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
