I am more than 1/2 way done redoing my '64 100. Yesterday I took apart the steering box and cleaned up all the old grease and all of the parts. I got looking at my manual and noticed there were no ball bearing retainer snap rings or gasket or seal on the gear box. The hole in the bottom for the grease zerk had no zerk and was packed solid with mud and grease. I ran a tap down into the hole, and Eureka, there were threads in there. Now there is a zerk in there. I've been searching the internet trying to find these snap rings, but have had no luck. Since there were none in there, and it worked, do you think I really need them? I probably do, but don't know where to find them. Any help or info would certainly be appreciated.
Thanks, Mike |

our sponsors carry them. they are steel cups with plastic retainers that hold the ball bearings in place. one set for the top and bottom. you are gonna want to get those in there. check your seal on the control arm that connects to your steering rod. its in between the plate that slides back and forth and steering box. its a steel shaped "D" with rubber or plastic on the steering box side.

The steel cups are there. In the "Parts Tree" diagram, and the owners manual, it shows 2 "C" shaped clips. It says they hold the bearings in place. I know I need the "D" shaped gasket, but what about these clips? Are they the same as the bearing race that keeps the bearings in place? Thanks for your help. Being a rookie at steering box rebuilding, all info is helpful and appreciated.

Some have the snap rings and some don't. It all depends.
But my 1964 100 didn't have them.

In my Blue Ribbon Service Manual, page 2-9 has a diagram of the steering column and all its associated parts. It does show a C clip for the top and bottom of the retainers but under the number description (11) it says not used now this manual is for models 71, 102, 122, and 123. That tells me that those clips are not used in the earlier series tractors.

DX3's link shows what you will need to rebuild. even if it didnt come with the rings it wouldnt hurt to have them. probably make it a heck of alot easier to put back together.

I think this is what you want.
http://www.cubcadet.com/webapp/wcs/s...-1_49413_49413 Use a wheel bearing at the top of the shaft, put the bolt in a drill press and take a 4" grinder and grind it down a little at the same angle.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
