Default Lift handle question

I'm finally getting around to repairing various issues on the 104 I bought last September. My lift handle is missing the release rod pin. The spring is rusty, and the spring washer is either missing or down the handle where I can't see it. The lift rod, however is in place, although it slips off the lift ratchet since it's not attached to anything at the top of the handle. The release rod lock assembly is intact.

I can see that the lift rod is threaded at the top, so I assume the release rod pin screws onto the rod. I have a copy of the exploded parts diagram but I'm not clear on exactly how the spring & washer fit in and exactly what the release lock assembly is supposed to push against to release the rod.

I have a copy of the 'exploded view' parts diagram. The drawing makes sense to a point, but I'd like to understand this better before ordering parts.

How many cub experts does it take to help a mechanically challenged new cub owner have the light bulb come on?

I just took the lift rod apart that was on my nephew's model 73. The PO had really rigged up the top button, but it did work. Anyway, if I remember correctly drop the washer down over the internal rod then the spring will slide down over that. Then you can screw the release button. Use a leather glove or something over the button to keep from scratching it up as you use vice grips or pliers to screw the button down into position.

When you push the button down and you want the lift arm to float you will simply push the front lock button in while holding the button down then slowly let the release button slide up as you keep pressure on the front lock button. To release the lock button, simply press downwards on the release button and an internal spring will disengage the lock button. I hope this is as clear as mud for you.

So the thumb push button is solid and the washer holds it in the float position?

It's helpful, thanks. I'm going to order a release button, new spring, and washer. Once I have all the pieces, I'll assemble per your instructions and see what happens. The order the pieces go together makes sense but I'm just having trouble visualizing what keeps the washer and spring in place (or does the spring fit over a groove in the release button?). And I really appreciate the tip on the lock and release procedure.

The inside of the chrome part of the lift handle bevels inwards with room for the rod to fit thru. To keep the spring from trying to slide down at an angle with pressure the washer acts as a seat for the spring to sit on and have a flat base. The spring will fit under the thumb button and compress as you screw the button down on the rod.

Now I'm getting the picture. So I'm guessing the lock release button is longer than I originally thought, and the lock release button presses against the bottom of the thumb button?

There is a notch in the thumb button for the lock button to catch on.

That's what I needed to know. I was mowing with my 125 and when I was done, the plunger part was gone. I have about an acre so it was lost "good".

I made one at work but made it straight as I wasn't sure about the groove.

Here is what the lift button looks like,you are halfway there at least you do not have to remove one that has been broken off at the thin area.same button for a 104 - 147 as for the wide frames not sure.
