Default 1250 a bit of help needed

Hello all, I have a problem starting my 1250. Have a new HD battery but it acts like there is just too much compression to turn over. If I turn it with a pry bar on the front it will turn over and start. Once started it runs very well but getting started is a pain in the backside. A friend suggested checking the valves but like I said once it starts it runs very well. Any suggestions??

Check your battery connections & cables, ESPECIALLY the Ground. Make sure the connections are clean, polished, and tight. It wouldn't hurt to add an extra ground cable from the Chassis Frame to the Motor Block.

Next, I would check the Motor ACR mechanism to see if that is working correctly.

Jerry,

I think Roland is right that you should look into electrical first. But just as some background info on what you're experiencing, the K series engines have a compression relief feature to make them easier to turn over. Every other revolution (at low RPMs,) the exhaust valve opens slightly to lower compression and make the engine easier to turn.

So by using a crow bar, you're moving the engine off the full-compression stroke to the relief stroke, which is giving your starting system a "running start" at turning it over, which will help if your starting system is a little weak.

I'd imagine that's what your friend is talking about when he suggests checking the valves. But your problem is most likely electrical.

Thanks guys, I have checked the electrical pretty well up to this point. Wire brushed the connections, removed, cleaned and retightened everything. The direct ground to the block might be a consideration. I am thinking a hard wire to the frame near the block, bolt it down and add a ribbon to the block. Trying to head off the inevitable break with all of the bouncing around. Maybe overkill but can I have too much ground? I'll try that this week and get back to you.

My 1250 acted very similar to yours. The issue turned out to be a very dirty starter. The guy that bought it from me, took the starter apart and cleaned the starter real good and said it now starts like a new one.

I was having this same problem last week. They're should be a factory ground near the coil to the frame on the firewall mounting bolt. I checked and cleaned every other connection on the tractor and no change. I filed and reattached the engine ground and it started cranking like a champ!

Oddly enough it also cleaned up my intermittent spark problem as well.....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
