Question 72 Carb refurb question

I have the 124 running and mowing :-) Now to start on the 72...
The steel parts of the carb are froze / rusted and the aluminum is corroded. I am wondering if it electrolysis cleaning will work on a carb???

has anyone tried it before?

I am not 100% sure but I would not put the aluminum carb in the electrolysis solution. I think that a 1 gallon pail of gunk carb cleaner would be better suited. You can get that stuff at any auto store. Let it soak for a couple days and it should be a little easier to disassemble.

Yep, you need carb cleaner. The electrolysis process used here is for ferrous metals only, not aluminum.

The cheaper version of the 1 gallon of carb cleaner is a smaller container of isopropyl alcohol.......$1 vs. $18.

Default Yes on carb cleaner, yes on PBblaster

Both throttle and choke shafts were frozen on the Carter I'm working on on my O. It had sat outside in the NC rain for years. I blasted the shafts with PBlaster 4-5 times over a couple of days then got it to move a couple degrees...blasted more solvent in there... then worked the shaft gently back and forth until I could work it free.

I'd advise that you need to really really really careful removing the butterfly screws or you'll get to explore the drilling out process I'm going thru :-)

PB pre-treat - DUH!
I use Kroil instead but it will do the same thing in shorter time.

I knew there was a simple thing I was missing - non-ferrous dissolves in the electrolysis chemical reactions.

Sometimes it becomes evident that I sleep with a Blonde.
Thanks Guys

Motorcycle guys boil their carbs in water and lemon juice. Looks like it works well, just haven't tried it myself.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
