Exhaust question

Will it harm a 10HP Kohler engine to run it with a muffler for a 4-8HP motor (3/4" inside diameter)??

I've put a straight pipe on my CC100 and it sure is loud,... and fearing that I might crack the exhaust port with a bigger muffler (through vibration) I picked up a small muffler this afternoon that is pretty much lighter but also has a smaller inside diameter. How critical is "back pressure" on these engines?

This is the exhaust system I have on my 100.

This is a factory set up. You should be able to find parts.

The smaller diameter exhaust will create more heat. Excess heat is destroys a motor.

Yeah, I can find the pepper-box mufflers at TSC,... but I put a stack on my CC100 in order to get the exhaust up over my head. Often by the time I finish mowing my 4 acres the smell of the exhaust about makes me sick.

I guess, I could put the original pepper-box muffler on top of my stack in order to reduce the chances of a cracked exhaust port, but that might look a bit odd.

Then again, maybe it's better the tractor looks a little odd, then for me to be gagging on exhaust fumes. LOL

My Son has this muffler on his 86.

The muffler is off a Cub tractor. We have an extra brace on it.

The wrap around the elbow is a product called header wrap.

It keeps the heat in. We were afraid the heat would ruin the decal on the side of the tractor. We haven't had any problems in the last 2 years.

I am NO Kohler Engineer, but a HVAC/R Service Tech with nearly 40 yrs of excperience.

The intake (Carb) and exhaust (Muffler) are based upon the volume (or Cubic Inches) of a motor. I would think, that a 4 to 8 HP muffler would handle less volume as opposed to a 10 HP model. With that in mind, installing a smaller muffler "may" hinder the exhaust, or cause a restriction, and compromise motor performance. That is the way I see.

Others may chime in with different data.

I've decided to go with a pepper-box muffler on the stack,... I still don't think it looks as "cool" as the cub mufflers some of you have, but it's light, quiet, and gets the fumes out of my face (due to the height of the stack).
