AARRRGGHHHH.
IH 582 PTO Expertise Needed I turned off my PTO switch, made a quick path around the garden and then completely lost my PTO. The amp guage moves to the left a little when I hit the switch, but the blades do not turn. I physichally moved the blades, wiggled wires, checked belt tension (quite tight). It simply stopped working! Any Ideas?

I'm not that familiar with the 582 but it could be a bad switch, fuse, or the air gap setting on the pto could need adjusted. If the gap is borderline too big, the heat from mowing for awhile will increase the gap and when you go to turn the pto back on, it won't turn on. I've had that happen on a 682.

Great! I will give that air gap setting a try. I found the diagram, but your experience helps it make more sense.
If it were the switch or the fuse, wouldn't the amp meter remain the same when I flip the switch? Can anyone tell me where the fuse is? Thanks for the advice! |

If the 582 is similiar to the 782 when it comes to the pto, the fuse is on the dash pedestal near the ignition switch. I'm not any good with amp meter stuff so someone else will have to answer that.

Derek If your fuse was blown, or the switch not making a connection, or the wire to the coil open your amp gauge would not move.
If your wire to the coil was shorted the amp gauge would probably peg momentary and then the fuse would blow. Since your amp gauge is moving when you flip the switch the coil is probably good and the air gap is off. If you make the air gap adjustment and it still doesn't work then you need to dig deeper and probably start by checking the resistance of the coil. |

The PTO diagram is very helpful, but I would probably add a note to it stating that the brake flange has been omitted for clarity. The first time you look at the magnetic clutch it's not immediately clear where the gap needs to be. It took me a few minutes to understand that the gap is not between the brake flange and the driven disk.

The gap was much greater. Probably a result of my pulling the motor to replace the clutch. Thank you all for the help !!! |
