Question 129 Amp Gauge reads "0"

How is it possible for a new amp gauge to read 0 amps and charge, start, run fine? I replaced the amp gauge in my dad's 129 b/c it read 0-60 amps and could not get an accurate reading. I'm getting 12.7 volt at the battery.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but just from my observation... with the battery at/near full charge, the charging system will charge slowly (low amperage), but with the electrical system under load, it'll charge at a higher amperage rate.

You will see almost no movement on a 60 amp ammeter...at full charge, the starter/generator only outputs 15 amps, so you won't even see anything when it's running with the battery fully charged.

By the sounds of it, I think John replaced the 60amp ammeter (better suited for a 70s car. Muscle-era cars normally put out about 40 amps) with a ???? ammeter, I assume something more in line with the generator output. However, you're right that 1-3 amps (normally when running) wouldn't show up.
