I picked up a 1450 the other day while I'm in the midst of my 1650 Project.
The PO says it stopped running and they think it's the engine. ![]() So I figure at the least, for $200 there are a lot of parts here that I can use on the 1650 - it has a solid 44A deck, and mine was stolen while at the sandblasting facility. If the engine is completely shot, I could probably part it out and get my money back. But it's unlikely that this tractor will become a parts bin. If I can get it to run, I'll take it up to our cabin and use it as a mower there. I'll swap out the better sheet metal, tires, and other parts to the 1650 to make that project easier, and maybe one day in the next year or so I can do a restore on the 1450. We can't seem to find our camera since last weekend, so I've got one of my older digicams charging up. Once it's ready to go I'll get some pics. So let's see if this old tractor can be brought back to life first... |

The tractor didn't come with a battery, so I picked one up today and installed it.
I'd turn the key, the starter would engage, and the flywheel would turn about 1/8" each time the starter was engaged. Initial thoughts guys? I'm thinking either the battery isn't fully charged from the store (if I'm lucky - I have it on the charger) or the motor is seized up. |

Does it turn by hand?

Cant wait to see some pics...either way it sounds like a salvageable machine!! Did you try turning the engine by hand? Something could have come loose in the starter area possibly, but its going to take some disassembly to really diagnose it. Pull the head and see if the piston moves freely, etc.
good luck ![]() Jeff (teet)

I haven't tried to turn it by hand yet. I just came in to take care of the boy and sat down for a minute.

Take the starter apart and clean it out. My 1250 was like that.

haha When I signed up here I thought it was crazy to have more than one Cub if you didn't have a large property, but it only a few months for me to have two of these Cub's as well! Sounds like a nice find!!

I verified that I could roll the tractor without the driveshaft spinning, pulled the spark plug and grabbed the flex disc at the engine to try and turn it. I couldn't budge it.
I should be able to turn it even with the driveshaft connected, right? |

Yes, you should. Is there any oil in the engine?

CC1650Dave pull the starter off and make sure there isn't a mouse nest in the flywheel shroud. Happened to my friends 1450 and he bought a new ported hydro pump because he thought the pump froze up. Just some thing else to check.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
