Default Kind of Excited.

I was gifted with this 72 Thursday. I couldn't believe it. I was talking with my mechanic shooting the breeze. I asked him how his niece's 71 restore for her 4H project was going. He said he didn't know. Then I asked him if he ever got rid of that old 72 and a 105 he had in a shed for the last decade or so. and he says just last week he GAVE them to the lawnmower repairman in our area. He was cleaning up around the shop and none of his kids wanted them..So he loaded them up and sent them down the road. By the way they both ran when they were parked about 10 years ago. I said you GAVE them away. He says "Why?" I said i was planning on buying one maybe in the next year or two, once i convinced my wife i needed one. Long story short he calls the lawnmower man and says my friend is coming to get that 72. Now I have this 72. Woohoo! but I'm goiing to need some help getting her tuned up. I can see that the gas has turpentined if thats what you would say in the sediment bowl. Any tips on cleaning it up would be appreciated. Also what other models would a compatible seat be found. Thanks in advance.

congrats on your score that was nice of him to give it to you! Carb cleaner and seafoam should work for cleaning the bad gas out of it. Be sure to wear eye protection and work in a ventilated area. Bad old gas is not good for you to breathe, and carb cleaner really hurts to get in the eyes.

Having a mechanic as a friend is nice, having a friend like that is even nicer!!!
Now the fun can begin and you have a great start for zero investment.

Congrats on your 72! Your going to have to rebuild the carb and I would replace the sediment bowl. I tried to clean one and had a heck of a time. I replaced the sediment bowl assy and had no other problems. Make sure you get all that old gas out of the gas tank too. As for finding a pan seat you could place a want ad for it in the wanted section of the site or contact on of our site sponser and you'l have a pan seat in no time!

Get a gallon of carb cleaner and soak the whole thing in there, disassembled. That'll get rid of any varnish in it, and the bowl will be fine as long as there is no corrosion on it.

2nd that one, here's a pic of sediment bowl that was in pretty gnarly condition, after a few days, more like a week as I forgot it was in the parts cleaner it came out looking like what's in the pic. I've tried the new sediment bowls and they're no where near the quality of the original one's.

Nice score on the 72! Need to find one of those someday. Have fun working on it

Great find on that 72!!! I'm pretty sure that the 70, 71, 72, and 73 are all about the same, except for some minor changes so almost all of their parts are interchangeable. It looks to be in good shape overall and it comes at an unbeatable price!!! I'd treat that friend to a nice steak dinner as a return favor!!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
