Ugh..thats no fun! I replace mine with the bronze ones, and those are a tight fit as well. I usually end up filing down the shaft a bit to make it go in without too much hammering, yet snug enough to not fall out.

I always filed down the shaft for a decent fit and used black RVT to hold them in. Never had a failure.

I file it down and use a pair of channel locks with a small piece of scrap metal that i put on the pto side, and press it in.You will need to file the brass ones to get a good fit.

When I put the fiber ones on I clean out the hole on the PTO arm with some 150 sandpaper. Then I taper the fiber button with the same 150 grit paper.Using the turnbuckle on the PTO rod,I slowly turn it until it is seated in the hole on the PTO arm. Then I tap lightly with a hammer to set it tight .Most times I get two buttons just in case the first one breaks, but I have had no problems since doing it this way.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
