Default Value of an Original?

I don't know how I've missed it for so long, but since fall, an Original has been sitting outside the barn across the street two houses down. I stopped by today to see if it was for sale. I met the guy's wife, and she said it is for sale, but had no other info. I left my contact info and her husband is supposed to call me back. I've always wanted an Original to restore and maybe mow with once in awhile, but I don't really "need" one. I just have no idea what a fair price would be. The machine appears totally complete except for half of the oil bath air cleaner. It does not run but the engine is free. It has homemade fenders on it. All the tires are flat. It has the hood ornament. The battery area is clean, the clutch moves freely, the shifter also moves freely. The pan seat has a stock appearing backrest. The paint is shot, but maybe only about 2% of it is rusty. It has a s/n of 55,xxx. It comes with a timed deck that is fairly rotted out, but the spindles are free. It was sitting in the barn for a looong time, but it was dragged outside in the fall to make room and it will now be for sale. When this guy calls, I have no idea what to expect. I have not seen many for sale, so I have no idea what market value is. Any insight would be appreciated!

Pics are a big factor in getting an estimated value, but from the description, and in my opinion, i wouldnt pay anymore than $200 for it. Hope you get that call soon!

No one really "needs" a Original, they are more of a toy/ novelty then anything. By the sound of it, I wouldn't go more then $200 either.

Thanks guys, I guess we'll see what happens if/when he calls. I'm just hoping he's not one of those guys that thinks he's got a piece of gold and wants $1000 for it....

$200 is a good price. It's also a 1963 model.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
