Default Cub 108 Keep or Part?

Hey Guys, just got a Cub 108 yesterday. I was told it was mostly complete but a little rough. Went to see it yesterday and lets just say it was much worse shape then I originaly thought. I currently have a 169 in pretty good shape and wanted a gear wide frame to go with it. I was going to use the 169 for just mowing and keep the front plow and rear attachments for the gear driven cub. That way im not constantly swaping the deck on and off.

I am trying to decide if I should just part the 108 or if I should try and put it back together. Below are some pictures.

Extra parts I got not in pictures are:
10 hp original engine missing head, gen/starter, carb gas tank and air filter
hood rough shape
cast gril surround but no center
headslight with nose

The Missing:
Steering linkage
10 hp Cyl head
Starter/Gen
Clutch assembly and drive shaft
Seat pan and seat

The Bad so far:
Front axel was broken but got another one that was also broken but was rewelded together, was able to already get that swapped
Fenders are rusted pretty bad
Front frame plate bent up
Has a fair amount of rust
Shifter is very sloppy, i have never had a gear drive so not sure if thats normal or not
Engine is missing cyl head, engine rotates but probably needs rebuild. 2 Headbolts also snaped off inside of block.
No carb or air cleaner

The Good:
Complete rear lift
Spring assist
Front headlights - added option?

I am concerned a little as to what it may cost just to get the missing parts replaced so I can atleast get it running, not even worried about making it pretty yet lol. I have 130 dollars in it so far so thats not bad at all. That includes gas to get it.

It would great if you could bring this one back to life, but how much are you looking to spend? With the list and pictures you provided, I would have to say part it out.

First I would clean it off with some degreaser, soap and water, you'll be a lot more inclined to want to work on it then.

After that you might consider re-powering it with something cheap and make a worker out of it. Keep the appearance as stock as possible and put a more modern motor in it.

That one isn't worth saving in my opinion.

I agree, its a mess and I'm thinking just part it out.

CC1450 what power plant are you thinking, I am open to any ideas.

I may just park it out back and look for another gear cub that I can combine with this one to build one good one.

The chassis is all there right. Why part it out? Does anyone here see anything they need? Maybe I am off the mark here I dunno.

I might be a relatively "new" member here but I come from an automotive background and have parted out more cars than I can count on both hands. It's a total pain and you never get what you hoped when you start. Not everyone is going to want each part right away, and from some of the pics I have seen of the guys parting out a lot goes to waste/ never sells and you end up scrapping it. I have scrapped a lot of parts I thought for sure would sell after I sat on them for years.

There is not going to be another 108 made ever again, why take one off the chart? You bought it like that condition right? Worst case scenario toss it on CL and get your money back out of it. Someone probably has an engine laying around and will see the ad and bite.

I've got a spare 1450 with a boat anchor'd kohler and am leaning towards repowering it rather than putting money into the old kohler.

I'm thinking find a 16-18 horse briggs vanguard horizontal shaft used advertised for 200 like this
http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/grd/2347036123.html ( I think this is a vertical shaft but you get the idea)

Times are tough right now and a guy with money in his wallet has the upper hand. Offer the guy 150-160 bucks cash when you get there and massage it into the cub.

Why would I want to do that? Because I can, and it will be a fun project. I'm the kind of guy who takes a car that came stock as an automatic and puts a 5 speed in it, because I possess the ability and I enjoy reworking things as I see fit.

I've seen a 18hp twin cylinder kohler for 350 on there that was calling to me to come get it too...

Then I can put a snow blade on my franken1450 and beat the snot out of it while my stock cub is tucked up for the winter.

I won't lose a wink of sleep with whatever you choose to do with it, she's your baby. I'm sure you could sell the rear axle for 200ish at some point if you are patient and just scrap the rest, and you'd be ahead. The other 108 guys tractors would just be that much rarer.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Thanks for the info CC1450. I am not really worried about getting my money back. You are correct most of the chasis is there. I am just missing the stearing linkage which I have found on evilbay for about 40 dollars shipped. Not a big deal there. I am also in no rush to make a decision. I may just park it in the back of the shed and wait, never know I may find someone selling another gear drive close by for parts or use mine as parts to make that one complete. Since its not the prettiest by any means, I wouldnt mind using it to do the hard work and keep my 169 nice as it was my dads when he was younger.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
