Default Sometimes...it IS the carb.

Well, the 124 has been giving me one headache after another. It just wouldn't idle....I had to bump up the idle to the point where it was out of the idle circuit range. I tanked the carb, rebuilt it, and put a bushing on the top of the main butterfly shaft. It ran better. But, while cleaning the carb, and block with brake cleaner, I hit the head gasket, and the rpm's shot up, so I knew that was it. Tore it down, filed, then sanded the deck with a huge wet stone, then sanded the head on a steel plate. I pulled the valves to do so, and didn't have time to cut the seats or valves, so I just lapped them. Put it all together, and it's got some serious compression. I did the points and condenser, used matt's technique. Painted, and installed....it just wouldn't idle again. So, I pulled the carb off the 122, and Voala'....it runs like a charm, and with no adjustment the idle was a quiet put, put, put. Tomorrow, I order a half dozen of the proper Servalite bushings. I always say "99% of issues are ignition"......I found that 1%.

Those what-a-what bushings? I need some for a couple of bad carbs. You should post some pics of your work!

I have to give credit to DX3, I knew about the replacement bushings...but didn't have a clue as to where to get them, So I made my own. Problem was they were alittle loose. Seeing his thread gave me something to go by. I ordered them through our local napa...be in on monday. They come in a pack of ten so I'll have extra.
It is such a relief knowing it's nothing serious. I was afraid I'd have to tear the engine down and rebuild. I just don't have the time or money to spare right now for that job.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
