After I looked through the parts diagram I noticed a bushing should be there. My guess is it's gone, I'm hoping to get it apart soon and find out.

That's what I noticed. I'm trying to deal on a 1250 parts tractor. Could I swap the lever assembly from a 1250 into my 149?

The guy wants $100 for a 1250 w no engine or sidepanels and a handful of other odds and ends (wheels, battery tray, air filter etc) I think that's a little high, trying to get him down to $75.

I got the adjustment bolt out and removed the clip on the bottom of the speed control rod. I used a 11/32 socket and 1/8 allen wrench. Gonna get a new bolt and lock nut.

There was a bushing in there, but it's quite worn. I'm going to see if I can find something at a hardware store to replace it, the part is $7+ shipping. Looks like any 1/2"ID x 3/8" plastic bushing should work.

I looked and looked and couldn't find anything readily available to replace the bushing. I thought bushings for a toro axle might work, but I stopped at my local toro dealer and checked them out, too small.

I finally decided to use my WV ingenuity, and wrapped the bushing with electrical tape once around. It added just enough thickness so that I could tighten it down.

I drove the tractor a little bit this evening and the lever works much better. I just adjusted it by guessing on the tightness. The manual says 7-12 lbs of pull force to keep handle in motion.

It still seems to want to take off if I push the speed control above halfway and let go. But I didn't drive it much, so I can't really say. Perhaps I need to adjust the lever a little tighter?

I also need to adjust the brakes more. They don't do much right now. Trying to figure out the best option. They have a little pad left, but I am bottoming out on the adjusting nut. I hate to just keep adding spacers/washers to the rods. I think I may try to put something in front of the arm on the brake pads itself, adding a little thickness.

All in all though, I think it's ready to test out. I probably won't get a chance for a couple weeks.

Yup. I found them a couple places online. Local cub dealer says they're NLA, so NOS is all that's available.

That's why I used electrical tape lol. If I ever place an order I'll throw one in, but I can't justify the shipping.

I finally took the 149 out and put it to use. I swapped the seat off my 1200 and pulled a cart around to pick up sticks and fallen limbs I've pilled up throughout the summer. The speed control seemed jerky, I had to give it a lot to get going up hills, then back off once it was moving.

For now I packed it up with the 1200 for the winter. I'm going to keep an eye out for a WF subframe for my push blade. But for now, I'm done wrenching on the Cubs for the season. I plan on pulling the driveline off the 1200 in the spring and getting it straightened out.

<I keep getting errors uploading pics, I'll come back later with a few for your enjoyment >

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
