I really like this thread. It has made me get my old '61 out and get a start on it. The pictures really do the trick. Thanks.

Default Steering question

I've gotten the O running around the yard and I'm looking at the next issue, which is the steering. This tractor turns to one side WAY tighter than the other, and there's not enough slack in the drag link to compensate. I guess I'll find the answer to this problem in the steering box (next stop on the rebuild-a-cub project).

Of course that means I'll have to take the steering box off and reclean/paint all of it...

This thing will be turning more yellow soon

John, this will be an adventure for both of us as I had my "O" on the real first test run tonight and have noticed the same thing as you,so my "O" has the same problems as yours, let us know what you find out!

Default progress

Had a couple hours today to figure out why the O turned grudgingly and not symmetrically.

First I removed the drag link and tie rod, and found I could barely move the wheels to the left even with nothing connected to the idler arms. Sooo.. I doused the spindle with oil, worked it side to side, removed the original bolts and washer and inserted an old rusty one to tap on and drive the spindle out of the axle.

This turned out to not be so easy as these things were VERY rusty inside. Out comes the brass wire wheel and the scotch brite pads and the rest of the de-gunking hardware. At the end of the process, the spindles were nice and shiny, the bores cleaned out on the axles and new grease on everything. The good news is the spindle to axle fit is great still...no slop. The bad news is the axle on the left side (I typed "drivers side" :-) ) is hosed ....grooved out about 1/16th of an inch where the bushings ride... I'll have to find another one.

The really good news is once put back together it's like having power steering. Seriously ... full turn to both side , one finger turning... it's fantastic!!

I had to drive it around the yard...conquering the ditch in the front of the yard in 1st gear no problem! This is going to be my hauling cub, for dragging the yard cart around and it's well suited to this.

Next, I need to adjust the clutch so the release point is not at the very top end of the travel and figure out what rusty joint is preventing it from releasing reliably and smoothly sometimes.

John

PS: The cheezy China tires I bought when I got the thing just so I can push it around are already cracked , in less than 5 months of being parked under cover in the shade. How can people sell such junk? I should take them back to tractor supply for a refund. Yes, I know they're for garden carts, but they'd be cracked in that application too!
Grhhhhhh.......,

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
