Default Slow

Not too much progress these past days. Work sure gets in the way of interesting hobbies.

I did make the 3 gaskets I need...the rear housing, the shift lever plate gasket and the one between the reduction housing and the body of the transmission. They came out pretty nice and fit perfectly.

I also dug out my replacement shift forks, found the detent balls and I guess I need to put those in next before reinstalling the differential and axle housings. I'm going to take Monday off next week so maybe I can see if this is all going to work then. I dont think swapping out the transmission will take too long (famous last words!)

Onward...slowly...

John

Not to worry John, as work and my kids (starting to play ball) are cutting into my time with the tractor work but such is life. I have really enjoyed you thread though!

Default More from the worlds slowest repair

I got the trans mostly back together today.

The trans I got from Duke didn't have a shifter, so I got one off of Ebay cheap, but naturally very grungy. I drove the little pin out, and pulled out the shifter retainer on the bottom and cleaned out about 40 years of gunk. It cleaned up pretty well.

One thing I didn't pay attention to when I put the shift fork rods back in , is that there's a right and a left. Guess which way I got them in the first time? You can see in the top photo of the insides, that the relief for the shift detent isn't in the right location when the relief cut for the bolt to hold the shifter fork is correctly aligned.

Time to take things apart (again) and rotate the shift rods.

The second trans inside photo shows the arms correctly oriented, such that the balls ride in the 3 detents in the front, and the bolt securing the shift forks have the clearance relief in the correct side.

By the way, the trans parts I got from ehay did not include the bolts for the shift rods. The looked like a standard 3/8" bolt but they're in fact fine thread. Yet another trip the the hardware store to find the correct bolts. It makes sense that this would be the way, since there's not much thickness for threads if it was tapped for a standard coarse thread 3.8" bolt.

Paint is drying so, it's time to rest a bit. I got one of the axle housings back on. Next stop is to reassemble the shifter and install it, the last axle and the covers.

Default getting closer

Got the O up on stands, the 2 bolts taken out of the rear of the driveshaftt, the wheels off, the brake rod disconnected and the 4 lower bolts off the trans. If I get time tomorrow, it'll be R&R time with the repaired transmission. Real men work outside!

Oh, check the packing on the box I received with the hydro pump. Sigh....

Looking good John! Holy cow that box got abused during shipping. Anything broke or missing due to the hole in the box?

Default It's changing color...

One step forward, half step back...it's together, but it's going to have to come apart again.

I got a new rag joint from the local dealer (how cool is that...they have in stock parts for a 50 year old tractor!) and got that in in a few min. Then I noticed the cracks in the top mounting holes for the transmission. I got the air tools out, cleaned up everything and made a backing reinforcement out of a modified grade 8 large washer and welded it in place. All I have is a mig and I'm about as good a welder as I am an operatic tenor, but it's sturdy and with enough grinder and flap wheel work you can hide a multitude of spatter.

Got the trans in place BUT I got the patch washer offset just enough so the lower bolt won't line up with the hole in the reduction housing....sooo, I'll have to remove the trans again, and file the hole to fit. Now that I know how to do it, it shouldn't take very long.

It was a day off work and a day to spend in the sun with a neat old Cub. I enjoyed the half step forward.

PS: Anyone know how much a transaxle for an O weighs? I can tell you Im a bit sore from schlepping them around today

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
