I'd say that's the best way. Just pop the side panels off. There are two bolts on each side towards the front, you can get to them with a socket wrench, a wobble extension helps. From there the whole assembly, hood and all lifts off.

And nice looking tractor.

Update:I think I got taken advantage of on this thing, I guess that is what happens when you trust someone you know.

PTO is fried no way around it. the coil? (outside part) is bent partly causing a slight metal on metal noise when a it is in free wheel.
the field? magnet is destroyed! it has gotten very hot again was told it worked last year
I did not ohm this part due to how it looks. See Picture

the muffler was cracked and a piece of plumbing pipe was shoved over the spout and a hose clamp in attempts to tighten it up I may try to re weld the muffler see Picture

the plate that the muffler bolts to is broken in a few spots top and bottom so it rattles I do not know if I can find a new one or not to replace this it is a pot metal so repair is a no-go there is also a bolt that holds that plate in place that goes on a cylinder, the bolt is broken off inside the assy I do not know if it would be worth trying to fish it out. everything is covered in oil for a engine that has less than 20 hours on rebuild. I am very upset at myself that I did not pick this thing over better before I bought it. Now I get to throw some money at this and hope the wife does not find out

Muffler is a common issue on these. I had my muffler bracket welded for $35 and bought a used muffler off ePay for $30. PTOs are usually pricey though.

well maybe just maybe it can get welded but I am missing some parts where the muffler bolts to it. I wonder If I could make a new one out of metal?

I wouldn't bother. Just buy a new one.

As a suggestion, I'd look at these guys for a new PTO. Cheaper to replace the whole thing than to repair the old. Even used is close to this price.

I can't find the PTO on their site, but here it is on Evil Pay:

What makes you think the field coil is shot? Because of the cracking in the covering? The metal you are hearing in free wheeling is possibly just the brake drum rubbing on the rotor and armature. And that's normal.
I'd still check it out to make for certain it's bad before dumping the money into a new one.
The other issues you have going on are typical with the QL muffler box and muffler. Make a crutch, and patch up what you can. It can be done, been there, done that... Or, step up and buy new. Your tractor, your money.
BTW, don't look like a fresh 20 hr rebuild to me.

I'm with zippy, check the pto out. What's it gonna hurt to check. Then you'll know if it no good. If it's no good then buy one. Mine is cracked like yours and works fine for being 37 years young!

As others have said, check the PTO coil out, I've seen worse and work fine.
I have used epoxy to coat the field wires to replace the cracked insulation with good success.
Don't be disheartened we all have BTDT. when it is all said & done you will have a nice Gt and it will still outlast the newer throwaway's
And you will feel the warmth of being to able to say I fixed it, and gave it new life.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
