Fix the seal. It will take all of 10 min once the driveshaft is out. Replace the fan too if it's broke.

As far as your questions about the springs, read this:
http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=4635

Then search "trunion repair" on this site. Must be at least 500 threads on the topic.
Thanks J-mech...exactly the advice I needed on whether to change the seal before I put it back together. The pump is currently sitting on my bench but I'll wager your 10 minutes will be triple that for me since I've never done it before...but plan of attack will to remove the front coupling pin and get the couple off...then carefully pry the seal out and replace. Will check "trunion repair"...Looks like the part in question is what IH calls "shaft-tron". There are very noticeable slots on both ends of that piece but I'll check out repair options (my wife has told me I'm crazy to keep the old girl going since I bought it but I mutter under my breath that I feel the same way about her...

You may want to check the bearing behind that front shaft seal, it the shaft moves very much, you'll want to replace that bearing also.

Thanks Sam...very little (if any) play on that shaft. The front coupling got removed much faster than I thought it would (the "cousin" on the drive shaft took a lot longer). Dropped the front coupling piece into a tub of kerosene and the liquid went black! Noticed that there is a very pronounced groove near the rear end of the casting which I guess is for grease that stays there until the next guy tears it apart 40 years from now...can't think of any part of the connecting parts that would cut a channel like that. Looking at trunion repair now...mine looks like several pieces shown in the pix...overall pretty square other than the "grooves". I don't have a welder but guess I'll figure something out.

Stop by your local Mom and Pop body shop with it one evening a little before quitting time, one of the guys there will weld it up for you for a six-pack. It won't take them 30 seconds to do the work.

Then take it home and file the corners back square again.

Long wanted to re-learn welding...this might be the excuse to buy a welder! Some pix of what I am working on as I decide whether to keep going or part this out...you can see the typical groove on the trunion plate...so move to the yellow part and tell me whether that is normal wear and whether it will matter. The shoulders seem to have some unusual wear. Looking at the trunnion shaft in the hi-def pix I now see some grooves that I don't see looking at it on the bench. Guessing there were shims on that to hold the plate tighter to the pump so as to avoid all the excessive wear but think they bailed out long ago...The linkage plates/rods (not shown) all appear to be in great shape. Will be heading to see Harvey tomorrow with my parts list...he is new Cub stuff but I know he has a "bone-yard" out back.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
