I just got finished looking at the mower and found my issues. When I removed the breather assembly I smelled "old gas". So it looks like I get to clean/rebuild a carburetor. That is something I do not like to do but I do it. As for the burning oil, it looks like it was getting dirt into the engine from the tube under the breather assembly. The clamp was not on the hose, it was just sitting on the part that is on the engine. Now the question, do I clean it or rebuild it since I will have to remove it? Thanks for everyone's input.

Just a thought.
Many times, I have carefully taken a carb apart without hurting any gaskets, cleaned and successfully reinstalled it.
But sometimes a gasket it damaged.
If you are not in a hurry, you might try that and if you need a gasket or kit then go from there.

If you haven't done it yet, I would take it apart to clean it. When I got my 1864, I was told it had "carb problems". So I took the carb apart, but it was perfectly clean inside. Turns out someone reversed the throttle and choke cables on the carb linkage. There is a rubber gasket between the body of the carb and the top which is usually reusable.
