Default Oil Seal leak??

Hey Guys,
Today I was finishing up my lawn work for the year I hope and I was mowing some pretty thick stuff and the front of my 1641 began to smoke quite a bit. I checked it out and behind the PTO oil was coming out at a pretty steady rate. I believe its the oil seal that's busted. I am not a mechanic really but I always try fixing everything myself and then a few days later bring it to a professional... Would I have to remove the PTO clutch to access this seal? If so is that a simple part of the whole job? Thanks for any answers.

The oil seal is not a bad job to repair. Remove the bolt and washer from the middle of the PTO and disconnect the power plug to the PTO. The PTO should just slide off. It may take a little coaxing.Probably you will need to get an engine gasket set. That will have the seal in it as well. I acquired a 1641 that had the same issue with the seal. You are going to find out that there are other issues going on as well. Somewhere you have an air leak. Every gasket and o-ring on mine was cracked or broken. O-ring under dipstick could be cracked, valve cover gaskets could be dry rotted and cracked or the crank case breather gasket under the carb could be cracked also. Them motors have got to have an air tight seal or they will blow the front seal out or puff smoke from the exhaust. Where about in NY are you from?

Thanks for the reply. I don't know if this could have caused the seal to crack, but I was mowing my garden over... It was a bit of a struggle for the pto depending on which plant I was mowing over... . Atleast I avoided the broccoli plants since they are have 3" stalks at the base. I kind of got in my mind that since this is a garden tractor it can do anything... I even hope to find a snow blade for it since someone gave me a set of AG tires on and extra set of rims. Anyway, I'm from southern Cayuga county. Thanks again.
By the way, where do I buy a seal kit? I only see individual seals on parts tree. Thanks.

cnysabo you should be able to get the gasket set with seals at your local NAPA store or a cub dealer. Some where around Genoa is a Cub dealer I believe. Or you can go over to Little's lawn and garden over on RT 13 in Newfield. If it something you may need help doing I am sure I can walk you through it. Or possibly stop over on a Saturday and lend a hand. Kelly

Thanks so much cubs-n-bxrs for the offer. I will contact Addy's which is the cub dealer down here near us. Then I will give customary few different attempts to figure it out. If all goes well, then I'll be up and running, if not I may take you up on that offer. At this point though it may not be until a few weeks before I attempt it. I will report how things go when I give it a try. Thanks everyone, I really appreciate these forums because they have helped me fix the issues I run into with our GT.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
