Start with the basics...are you getting 12V at the coil? How about at the points? If there's no electricity to those shiny new points, they aren't going to work. Also, take a piece of paper and run them through the new points to remove any oil that may be on them from the factory.

Keep in mind if the key is in the off position (or if the ignition switch is not functioning) jumping to the starter won't provide voltage to the ignition system even though the engine will crank.

i got it running after i found out i wasnt getting any power to the coil itself so i ran a wire directly to the coil from the battery and i fired right up. Guess i need to get me a new wiring harness or make me one. thanks for all your help.

If you keep that wire connected full time you will burn up your coil. That is why the coil power is made thru the ignition switch.

thanks for the heads up about the wire going to the coil. I have the wiring diagram but cant seem to get the ignition switch to work. there are so many wires that have been spliced that i dont know which wires lead to what so eventually i will be tearing the whole mower down and going through everything and attempting a restoration. I know there are several parts that i will neeed due to the prior owners neglect. If anybody knows where i can find a new hood, dash and dash tin for a relatively cheap price i would appreciate the info.

You need to put an add in our Wanted Section, and also give your Sponsors located at the top of every page a call or email with your needs. There is a company called Porch Electric that makes complete wiring harnesses for our Cubs. You might google them and check out their prices. I am going to get one of their harnesses for my 128 in a few months. They also sell their stuff on Evil Bay.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
