Default help with crank, cam shaft timing procedure

Im reading the FSM about reinstalling the crank and cam, ive got the cam shaft part down, shims and end play and what not... the FSM is a little cluttered with all the timing procedures with the balance gears, and since those are not going back in im a little lost...

can some one give me a basic timing procedure for the crank and cam ?

line up timing marks at TDC ? Is it that simple ?

Thanks guys

Aligning the timing marks on the cam and the crank doesn't really have anything to do with TDC. And yeah, once you skip the balance gears, there's about 6 pages of the TSM that are irrelevant. It's a huge chunk of the rebuild section, which goes to show how much complexity these balance gears added to a simple engine.

The timing marks have everything to do with top dead center. One tooth either way and it will throw TDC off by a mile. The piston will still come up all the way but will be in the wrong orientation to the mark on the flywheel. It will fire at the incorrect time. I mark the lines on the cam and crank with a white paint pen to be able to see them better when installing them.

Kelly,
If you pull the bottom pan will you be able to see if the cam and crank timing marks line up?

I marked the line on the crank and the dot on the cam. If you look carefully at how they mesh, the line on the crank will coincide precisely with a tooth and the dot on the cam will coincide precisely with a tooth slot. Get the tooth in the slot and the marks line up perfectly. I marked the tooth and the slot, that way you know when it is perfectly matched.
I could be 180 off on exactly which is the gear and which had the slot, but you will see if you look closely at each.

Bad picture but gives general idea:

TDC means 'Top dead center' and means that the piston is at the top of its stroke, which has nothing to do with where the cam is, or the cam timing, so Dave is right. Still, though, the marks obviously have to be aligned or the engine will not run.

Yeah, what I was reading (right or wrong) was that he was putting the piston at TDC while doing the match-up between the cam and crank, and it doesn't really matter where the piston is when you're doing it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
